A species that is found from India thru South East Asia to Australia, some Pacific islands, and as far as China. A natural terrestrial grower on the edges of the rainforests, in water seepages that dry out during its dormant months.
A large container, well drained, with maximum water and fertiliser while the plant is actively growing will produce a plant with a spike to 1.8 metres high. A rich semiterrestrial media consisting of leafmould and gravelly soil is needed.
In the cooler months, water should be withheld and only applied to prevent complete drying out. Phaius tankarvilleae foliage is large and soft, and should be protected from both wind and excess sunlight.
